The name “potatoes” (lat. Solanum tuberosum), under which today’s inhabitants know this plant (vegetable), proposed Kaspar Baugin in 1596. From this word the German variant of the name of underground fruits “Kartoffel” was formed, which gave the Russian name.
Potatoes SVG – description and appearance. Plant and vegetable structure.
The number of stems per plant varies from 4 to 8-10. Their height, depending on the type of potatoes, can not exceed 30 cm or reach 1.5 meters. On the upright fleshy stems of green (sometimes with a brown hue) color distinctly stand out the peculiar ribs. Dark green potato leaves on short petioles rise spirally from the base to the top.
Shoots (stolons), which can be up to 0.5 m long, diverge from the part of the potato stem submerged in the ground in different directions. At their ends there are potato tubers, the thin outer shell of which is formed by cork tissue. On their surface there are recesses, called peepholes. There are several buds in them, from which a new plant develops. The plant’s flowers collected at the top of the stems are usually white. However, there are varieties with pink, blue or purple flowers. Below you can see what the potato stem looks like, as well as a detailed potato structure.
The above-ground potato fruit is a poisonous green berry that resembles a miniature tomato. As it matures, it acquires a whitish hue.
The appearance, weight and colour of the top layer of the potato tuber and its pulp vary depending on the variety. The tuber skin can be painted in various shades of brown, yellow, pink or purple. Therefore, the question of what color potatoes, an unambiguous answer can not be given.
