Massachusetts borders New Hampshire and Vermont in the north, New York in the west, Connecticut and Rhode Island in the south, and the Atlantic Ocean in the east. The islands of Martas Vineyard and Nantucket are located south of the Cape Cod Peninsula. Boston is the largest city in the state (agglomeration of about 5.8 million), but the majority of the metropolitan population lives in the suburbs.
Massachusetts is called the state of bays because of several bays on its coast: Massachusetts, Cape Cod, Buzzards, and Narragansett. To the west are the Taconic Ridge and the Berkshire Hills Mountains.

Higher education, health care and financial services also play an important economic role.
