Ireland is a state in Western Europe, occupying most of the island of Ireland. It borders Northern Ireland (part of the United Kingdom) in the north. The area is 70.2 thousand square kilometers. The name of the country comes from the Irish language. Éire “state”.
The capital is the city of Dublin, which is home to about a quarter of the country’s population (1.4 million people).
