Initiative (Latin initialis “primary”):

Initial – a special initial letter of the text or a part of it; another name – a letter.
In manuscript books, the letters were often decorated with miniatures and ornaments. In the first printed books, colored letters continued to be handwritten. In the ancient printed books for a long time to start a new text used polytypagous alphabets, which were replaced by simple letters in the form of an ordinary letter typeface, but enlarged pin.
